Derby – North Evans firefighters responded Thursday night to a report of a structure fire at the dental office of Dr. Jay Clark on Erie Road in the Town of Derby. “Upon arrival, we had heavy fire in one of the rooms.” Nick Mecca, North Evans Fire District Chief. “We did an aggressive interior attack and we got the fire knocked down in the main fire room.” “We had extensions into each adjoining room.”
According to Chief Mecca, the fire was under control in about 15 minutes. Two staff members were inside of the building when the fire broke out. Both persons were able to escape the fire unharmed.
“We brought the second alarm in due to the size of the building.” Mutual aid companies were comprised of Highland, Evans Center, Lake View and a ladder truck from Scranton. The Town of Brant also provided their tanker truck for operations.
As for a cause, “The dentist had been doing some work earlier in the day and appears that something was accidently left on. We’ll be investigating that further.” Damages to the contents and building are being estimated at $50,000. After some repairs, the building can be reoccupied. According to Mecca, this is the third time in thirty years that fire broke out in that building. “The first two fires were pretty devastating fires, this one was minor compared to the first two.”
